You've got your APS. Now you're staring at "Degree" and "Diploma" with no idea which matters more for your future. The honest answer: neither is automatically better — they're built for different goals.

What is a Degree?

A degree is an academic qualification offered by universities. It goes deeper into theory and research, takes longer to complete, and opens the door to regulated professions and postgraduate study.

  • Academic focus — deeper theory, research and critical thinking.
  • Higher APS required for entry (typically 26–38+).
  • Leads to professional registration (engineering, accounting, medicine, law).
  • Can lead to Honours, Masters and PhD study.
  • Examples: BEng, BCom, LLB, MBChB, BSc.

What is a Diploma?

A diploma is a career-focused qualification offered by universities of technology (and some traditional universities). It's shorter, more practical, and designed to get you working sooner.

  • Practical focus — career-ready skills, hands-on learning.
  • Lower entry requirements (typically APS 20–28).
  • Often includes workplace experience (WIL) as part of the qualification.
  • Can "convert" to a degree via an Advanced Diploma + postgraduate pathway.
  • Examples: Diploma in IT, Diploma in Marketing, Diploma in Hospitality.

Which one should you choose?

Forget generic advice. Match your situation to one of these scenarios:

Choose a degree if…

  • You have an APS of 30+.
  • You want professional registration (CA, engineer, doctor).
  • You enjoy theory, research and writing.
  • You plan to do postgraduate study later.
  • Your career legally requires it — law, medicine, architecture.

Choose a diploma if…

  • You have an APS of 20–28.
  • You learn better by doing than by reading theory.
  • You want to enter the workforce sooner.
  • You have a specific technical career in mind.
  • You plan to use it as a stepping stone to a degree later.

Can you do both?

Yes — and many students do. South Africa's qualifications framework is built around articulation pathways that let you stack qualifications over time.

Diploma Advanced Diploma Postgraduate Diploma / Degree-equivalent

For example, TUT offers diploma-to-degree pathways in IT and Engineering, and most universities of technology (DUT, CPUT, VUT) have similar articulation routes. You can start with a diploma, get working, then come back for an Advanced Diploma and eventually postgraduate study — without ever sitting a matric exam again.
